(a) internal and external factors in historical change [how a language changes due to factors existing in the language itself and also due to contact with (an)other language(s)];

(b) conflicts between 'standard' and 'non-standard' realizations of a sociolinguistic variable [e.g. how one pronounces the (t) in a word like 'butter' based on style, gender, social background etc.]; or

(c) the outcome of dialect or language contact in a particular setting.

I am fairly sorted with ideas and resources for my other two assignments (describing grammar and 2nd language curriculum planning and implemetation) but this subject just baffles me.

There are two problems: (1) I like this subject so much that I don't know what area to focus on and (2) the lecturer encourages us to get out there and collect some of our own original data from direct observation.

So I am like a lil sail boat bobbing along trying to find something to anchor on to, least I shall be doomed to float indefinetly or even sink.
